Korean FMA and SDB learn something of St Mary Mazzarello from Aussie expert

SEOUL: 6th January 2006 -- Acknowledged expert on the spirituality particular to Mary Domenica Mazzarello's contribution to Salesianity, Sr Edna Mary MacDonald FMA, has been preaching retreats to the Salesian Sisters in Korea since 29th December 2005, and will extend her services to the SDB Rectors in Korea at the Rectors' meeting on 18th January 2006.  The retreats to the Sisters are part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for the FMA Korean province and are a way of deepening the FMA spirituality and charism in that country.
Sister Edna Mary is in her second term as Provincial of the Australian Province.  She hails originally from New York, USA but long ago became a true blueAussie.
Korea FMA province is something of a key point in the FMA East Asian scene.  It will be the location for the CIAO (Conferenza Ispettoriale Asia Orientale) meeting in February which will be attended by the Mother General, Sr Antonia Colombo, three general councillors and around 50 other Sisters from the region, a meeting which more or less compares with the SDB EAO region Team Visit.  The FMA purview at that point will extend beyond Korea to Mongolia, where the Sisters intend to begin their presence sometime in 2007.
Korea is a growing FMA reality.  They already have 235 professed Sisters.  11 Sisters today make their perpetual profession.  Yesterday a further 7 made their first profession.  The province has sent 9 missionaries off to Africa and 3 to various parts of Asia.  They currently have 14 novices.  Amongst the works of the province are five large youth centres, and they work with the SDB in 3 other youth centres.  In other respects, their profile in Korea is similar to that of the Salesian SDB in that they are noted for their work for underprivileged girls and girls at risk, are involved in parish apostolates, schools and the animation of youth ministry in various dioceses.  In Seoul, in more recent times, they work in a Salesian cultural centre with media education and the animation of youth groups.
