Solemnity of Mary Help of Christians in the Diocese of Baucau, Timor Leste

BAUCAU: 25-05-10 -- Traditionally the Feast of Mary Help of Christians in ITM vice province is solemnly celebrated in the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians in Fatumaca. However this year, it was celebrated at the Cathedral of the Diocese of Baucau. One reason was to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Foundation of the Salesian Congregation and to thank Mary Help of Christians, Our Mother, for the Help she had given during the past years to the people of East Timor.  But it was also due to the request of both bishop of Dili and Baucau.
The theme of the celebration: “Mary has done everything”. The Eucharist was presided by the Bishop
Basilio do Nascimento of Baucau, concelebrated by Fr. Pronvincial, Andres Calleja, and the Salesians and some diocesan priests. In his homily the bishop thanked the Salesian Congregation for the effort in imparting education and evangelization in East Timor specially during the difficult moments of the history of the country. The bishop also ask the Salesians and the Salesian Family to continue to respond promptly and with new spirit to the needs of the Church and the country and to the new challenges today particularly in the area of education and evangelization of young people.
Though it was raining, there were aproximately 5000 young people from Salesian communities participating in the event.
Two weeks before the celebration, the oldest statue of Mary Help of Christians from the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians of Fatumaca was solemnly taken around to visit the Salesian communities in the eastern area.
