FIS: Communications and Formation partnership for Salesianity and Spirituality

TALISAY CITY (Cebu): 24th May 2008 -- Don Bosco Formation Centre in Talisay City near Cebu, Philippines, in partnership with the Don Bosco Technology Centre, is moving step by step to realize a vision of establishing an Institute for Salesianity and Spirituality to cater to the needs of Salesians, seminarians, lay people and religious.  The two houses have partnered to introduce a new tertiary degree course: a Bachelor in Arts with Majors in Religious Education and Pastoral Communication.
While enrolled at the DBTC students, most of them candidates for Salesian life at present, will hold their classes in the Don Bosco Formation Centre. The two institutions are strategically placed in that they are surrounded by formation centres belonging to other Religious Congregations, and there is already a lay-based formation centre for Salesianity, with strong Salesian guidance (known as DB-CLAY, cf earlier austraLasia items #1421/1767).  Other students, lay ministers from surrounding parishes have also expressed strong interest in the course.
The move comes from the felt need to provide a more formative environment for Salesian candidates/aspirants: to design a curriculum that lines up with the needs of the pastoral work they are choosing to go into; to emphasize a more relevant evangelization and education through communication.
Complementing the re-inforced program for Religious Education is the lineup of Pastoral Communication subjects aimed at honing skills and offering theory for more effective ministry. The course will include subjects such as theory and processes of communication, communication and social change, socio-pastoral communication, ethics of communication, mass media: radio-tv-film, computer-based design and print, new media.
It goes without saying that at this point the Salesians are looking for support through donation of books and equipment. Interested sponsors and donors can contact Fr Fidel Orendain at dbfiscom@yahoo.com or if you have nothing material to offer, then at least some ideas and a word of support!  It is to be hoped that they will not overlook one line in the recent GC26 document which encourages us to look at 'open' approaches including open source/Free-libre software.
