Bùi Chu Diocese, North Vietnam, gains new Salesian Auxiliary

ROME: 29th November 2005 --  Pope Benedict XVI has today appointed Fr Peter Nguyen Van De as auxiliary bishop to the Bùi Chu diocese, North Vietnam.  The news appears to have been announced by Cardinal Sepe on a visit to Vietnam.  Unusually, this announcement has caught a number of people by surprise.  Further information is being sought.
Fr Peter Nguyen Van De will be auxiliary to Bishop Joseph Hoang Van Tiem, also a Salesian, appointed in 2001 and consecrated bishop on 8th August of that year.  Bishop elect Van De will be titular bishop of  Ammaedara.  His predecessor in that titular See was Bishop José Godard, Vicar Apostolic of Pucallpa, Peru, who died on 13th November.
Bishop-elect Van De was born 15th January 1946 and was professed as a Salesian on 15th August 1965.  He was ordained priest on 17th December 1973, all of which means that he is just turning 60 with 32 years of priesthood behind him.  He was provincial of Vietnam from 1991-1997, after which he was appointed Rector of the Formation Community in Xuan Hiep.  More recently, however, he has been teaching at the seminary in Hanoi.
