'Universal Church' in Jerusalem sees 17 new Deacons

JERUSALEM: 7th June 2009 --  11 Salesians and 6 Missionaries of Africa were ordained Deacon by Bishop Luc Van Looy sdb on 7th June at St Anne's Basilica on the Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem.  All the ordinands are students at the Studium Theologicum Salesianum based at Ratisbonne Monastery.
Bishop Van Looy, Bishop of Ghent, and no mean polyglot, was at home amongst his multinational congregation on the day. He conducted the event mainly in English, but switched occasionally to French, Italian and even threw in a little Latin! He stressed the gifts a deacon should bring to his ministry, and the gift of many families giving their sons to a universal Church.
Daisuke Joseph Kitagawa sdb, from Japan was one of the ordinands.  His provincial, Fr Aldo Cipriani, en route to Rome for the new Provincials' Course, was present. One Australian visitor was also able to attend the ordination - Fr Peter Carroll, outgoing Provincial Economer for the Australia-Pacific Province. Peter is currently staying at Ecce Homo which is close by to St Anne's.  St Anne's itself is under the care of the Missionaries of Africa.
The new Salesian deacons hail from India (6), USA (1), Italy (1), Japan (1), Ethiopia (1), Haiti (1).
