Communications Office - development in Poipet

POIPET: 13th March 2006 --  It is good to see a steady development in Salesian Cambodia's approach to things; the latest appears to be the Poipet Pastoral and Social Communications Office.  They announce, in their first 'update' newsletter for the Don Bosco Centre, that they are organising an education seminar for the end of April on the theme 'Khmer helps Khmer: informal education proposal for children in the Poipet area.'. The idea for the seminar has arisen out of the experience of young volunteers teaching children in the villages who for various reasons cannot attend school.  The idea is to encourage the volunteers, give them skills and support.  Amongst speakers at the seminar will be the principal of Don Bosco Tech in Sihanoukville and an as yet unconfirmed speaker from the Cambodian education ministry.
Don Bosco Poipet Centre is not yet two years old.  It was opened in October 2003. Poipet itself forms part of Palilai village in Bantea Meanchey Province bordering with Thailand.  The village has a population of somewhere around 70,000, an imprecise figure because the area is a transit zone between Thailnd and Cambodia and people are frequently on the move.  In fact one of the central social problems for the area is trafficking - of goods and people, and children are caught up in this social evil.  The Don Bosco Centre provides a shelter for such children, and offers literacy and skills training, as well as a regular youth centre open to all.
