Cambodia: reading empowers the children

BATTAMBANG: 30th July 2007 -- Don Bosco Children Fund Ministry has supervised Don Bosco Literacy Centres (DBLC) in Battambang since 2000.  The DBLC aim is 'For Every child a Reading Program'. It focuses on development for out-of-school children aged 10-15 to help them be mentally, psychologically and physically able to accomplish the basic linguistic skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and the basic mathematical skills of arithmetic. A new skill, social studies, is included.
This elementary education is an intensive three year school-based management programme. To meet the objective DBLC inculcates general knowledge and skills, promotes personal qualities, and helps the students accumulate life skills and work experiences of benefit to them and to society as a whole.
On 20th July fifty such students gained their certification and qualified to continue studies at High School level for the school year 2007-8 in Government schools.  The certificates were approved by Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.
