Update on Ondoy in Manila and environs

JAKARTA: 28th September 2009 -- Following the previous news item, any number of items came bounding in from people in the Philippines or of the Philippines, each with his or her own story to tell.  The country is by no means out of trouble yet, if further tropical depressions heading that way develop.  Here is the 'Salesian' situation as we have it at the moment:
     - Salesian communities in Metro Manila have virtually all been affected by ground floor flooding.
    -  The most affected persons are lay mission partners and students who come from the eastern parts of the city which are badly flooded.
    -  Fr Martin Macasaet, Rector at DB Mandaluyong, reports that 392 of their students come from severely inundated areas. Little is known of the plight of these students and their families. Classes are suspended, naturally, and they are working on relief packages and action.
    - Sr Mel David FMA writes from Mongolia to say that her mother was staying with her brother in Pasig (entirely under water) "and up till now my brothers cannot reach them. They feel so helpless. Please pray for them".  One gathers that she too experiences the same feeling at such a distance, so let's include her in our prayers.
    - DBCS in Paranaque and the Seminaryo became temporary shelters during the height of the storm.
    - Down in Canlubang, Bro Jomar tells us that "water entered some of our facilities. We had to clean up. " Aspirants, prenovices, parents have all joined relief efforts.  But at least they are maintaining regular classes.
    - Back in Mandaluyong, St Dominic Savio Parish has become a temporary shelter.
    - Don Bosco Tondo on the coast is OK. It seems the worst areas are much further east.  Tondo is ready to send out help to others.
The Youth Ministry Commission in the Province has the task of coordinating relief efforts.
