Celebrations for 25th Anniversary of Salesians in Indonesia

JAKARTA: 6 April 2010 -- The Rector Major, Fr. Pascual Chávez Villanueva, has just arrived in Jakarta to join the Salesians of Indonesia in their celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Salesian Presence.
After being welcomed at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, the Rector Major with his secretary Fr Juan José Bartolomé, was brought by the Provincial, Fr. Andres Calleja, and Fr. Andrew Wong, the Regional Superior for East Asia Oceania,  to Wisma Salesian Don Bosco, the Postnovitiate, where the Salesians, Salesian Sisters, some Cooperators and friends of Don Bosco were awaiting him.
After Rosary and Evening Prayer, the Community had supper with the Rector Major then presented some slides of the Salesian works in the country, while the Provincial in his good-night talk explained how even before the Salesian presence began in Indonesia, Don Bosco was already known in Indonesia, with several schools and orphanages named after Don Bosco since as early as 1927.
The 25th Jubilee celebrations were actually launched last September under the banner of
'Bersama Mewudjudkan Mimpi' or 'bringing the dream to fruition together', though it is this year, 2010, which actually celebrates the 25 years, beginning in Rajawali Selatan, Pademangan in 1985. The Salesians moved to Wisma Salesian Don Bosco in Sunter in 1991. It became the Salesian mother house of Indonesia. Then, Tigaraksa followed in 1999, St. John Bosco Parish, Sunter,  in 2002, Sumba in 2003, and finally Blitar and Surabaya in 2009. Likewise the number of Salesians has increased. The very first Indonesian Salesian was Fr. Andre  Delimarta. Others followed and today there are more than 50 Indonesian Salesians.
The Rector Major and his Council recently decided to create an Indonesian Delegation under the vice province of ITM, based in Dili, East Timor.
