Founding passion kindling 150 years: Salesians’ hearts leading the future
Love to educate and educate with love: Preventive System Seminars for the Salesian Family

HONG KONG/MACAU: 19th November 2009 --  To celebrate the 150 years of the foundation of the Salesian Congregation, in the last week of October 2009, three seminars with similar content on the Preventive System were held in Hong Kong and Macau attended by more than 1,100 teachers from the schools under the management of Salesians, FMA and SAL. Some members of the Salesian Co-operators, employees and parents also joined the seminars. The Delegates of Diocesan Education and officials from the Education Department in Hong Kong and Macau were also present at the events.
The seminar was unveiled by the first talk delivered by Fr. Andrew Fung, Vice-Provincial of the China Province. By playing clips extracted from the Don Bosco film “Mission to love”, Fr. Fung indicated that the purpose of founding the Salesian Congregation by Don Bosco is to continue God’s calling to save the most disadvantaged youth. The most precious legacy Don Bosco left behind is his pedagogy of love - the Preventive System. The core of the pedagogy is the “loving heart”. The Preventive System is not only an effective way to educate the youth but also a path leading to sanctity for educators. Following on was the presentation made by Fr. Thomas Klemmer who shared the dialogue between the preventive system and the cultural sector in China and the insights on youth education in China. Sr. Cecilia Tse FMA talked about the implementation of the Preventive System from a feminine angle.
Ben Chan of Youth Outreach analyzed the internal needs of youth today and suggested educators should spend quality time with them during their development. Mr. Liu and Ms. Lam from Tang King Po School shared with the attendants that the most effective way to develop good behaviour is by encouragement and guidance with loving care, cultivating the individual conscience and good judgment. Educators should have a strategy to execute the education in love without influenced by individual emotion and temper.
Sr. So Man Wong from our Lady’s Primary School together with Ms Ho and Ms Lam from St. Anthony’s Primary School emphasized the importance of religion on youth development as well as its positive impact on striving for life purposes. They suggested that through teachers’ examples of piety, encouragement and development of conscience, faith sharing and proclamation of Jesus, young people will be invited to join the Church.
In his concluding remarks, Fr. Simon Lam, Provincial of the China Province showed deeply appreciation for the vivid and touching sharing by all speakers. Through the seminars, the understanding of the Preventive System has been deepened, the Salesian identify is reaffirmed and the apostolic zeal is re-kindled. Fr. Lam encouraged the collaboration amongst the Salesian Family members so as to fulfill the vision of the Rector Major Fr Pascual Chávez as in the Strenna for 2009: “Let us make the Salesian Family a vast movement for the salvation of the young”
