THIS morning Archbishop Denis Hart met with the Rector Major of the Salesian Congregation, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime. Fr Ángel is the 10thsuccessor of St Don Bosco and the first Spaniard to be elected as Rector Major of the Salesians. He was elected at the 27th General Chapter of the Salesians, on 25 March 2014.

Fr Ángel was born in Spain in 1960 and made his first profession as a Salesian in 1978. He was ordained a priest in 1987.

He has a degree in Pastoral Theology and a Licentiate in Philosophy and Pedagogy. In 2009 he was appointed Provincial of South Argentina, based in Buenos Aires, where he came to know and work with the then Archbishop, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis.

Fr Ángel is visiting the Australia-Pacific Province from 5 to 7 May. His itinerary includes visits to Fiji, Samoa, New Zealand and Australia.

After meeting Archbishop Hart this morning, Fr Ángel was heading to meet with school and youth leaders at Ferntree Gully. During the remainder of his stay in Melbourne Fr Ángel will spend time with the Salesians in Ascot Vale and make a visit to the Don Bosco Youth Centre and Hostel in Brunswick.

In his travels to the Australia-Pacific Province, Fr Ángel is joined by Fr Vaclav Klement, Regional Councillor for East Asia-Oceania; Fr Horacio Lopez, Rector Major's Secretary; and Fr Jacob Iruppakkaattu, Member of the Social Communications Department.
