Salesian Bulletin: "It is high time, one that brooks no delay, to invest resources.."

ROME: 2nd October 2005 --  Just one month after the gathering of most of the world's Salesian Bulletin editors, and as the General Council members filter back into Rome, a final statement has been produced, expressing what the editors want to say - to the Rector Major and his Council, to Provincials and indeed to all confreres.  Of course, the final statement was produced in draft form before the editors left, but they wanted it to be worked on to their satisfaction.
The editors' final statement is not wimpish, nor pietistic.  Its background was the clear insistence by Social Communication Councillor, Fr Scaramussa, that the Salesian Bulletin is a Salesian 'Work' in the same sense that we use the term of parishes, schools, youth centres and the like.  Hence it has to be treated as such at province level, seeing to its consistency in terms of longer terms of office, its support in terms of manpower and money.  This led the Editors to state, ultimately that "it is high time, and one that brooks no further delay, to invest resources in social communication for a more significant presence in the world today".  A general exhortation, then, which includes the impact of the Salesian Bulletin.
More specifically, the Editors requested of those who have the power to provide it:
    - a more detailed outline of the function and activities of the SB editor
    - a greater freedom from other duties which hinder the editor from carrying out his not always easy set of tasks more professionally
    - a longer period for those appointed to the role, so as to ensure more use of the competencies that have been acquired.
Amongst the interesting features that emerged from the Rome meeting, in terms of the East Asia-Oceania region, was the reality that two provinces, Japan and Indonesia-Timor, are preparing to launch new editions of the Salesian Bulletin, and sent their team along to the meeting as part of their preparatory process.  Another interesting feature was the presentation of an innovative approach, backed by a due amount of local research, by the Philippines North Province, who have launched 'Code Red' in conjunction with the Salesian Bulletin.  In fact, Code Red now pays for the SB.  Perhaps in another austraLasia, an outline of this interesting project can be developed.

VOCABULARY
brook: as a verb it mean to tolerate - in this case, in the negative: not tolerate
wimpish:  a wimp is a weakling.  Not wimpish = not weak.
