Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 14 June 2016 -- Learning does not only take place within the four walls of a classroom. Students learn greatly if they are given an opportunity to interact with each other, work together in groups and do practical activities, applying the principles and concepts taught in the classroom.

The “SCIENCE WEEK CELEBRATION” at Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu gave the students an occasion to demonstrate to their peers what they are passionate about. The week commenced on Monday 6th June with the celebration of World Environment Day. Guest speakers from the Center for Environmental Law and Community Rights (CELCOR) made the students aware of the many different endangered animals in Papua New Guinea. The day ended with a School wide ‘clean-a-thon’ by the students and planting of trees by the graduating students of Gr. 12 & ITC 2.

Right through the week during the lunch breaks, the different classes had a chance to present their projects to their companions. It was a delight to see budding scientists explain and defend their projects in front of the judges and their fellow students. There were also several Science Fun Games during the project presentation.

The different classes presented the following projects:

  • Gr. 9 – Bones and Muscles
  • Gr. 10 – Harmful Disease caused by Microbes (TB, HIV/AIDS, Dengue and others)
  • Gr. 11 – Chemistry: 3D models of Hydrocarbons
    • Biology: Food and the Digestive System

Physics: Improvised Air condition and Salt water battery

  • Gr. 12 – Chemistry: Electrolysis of Aqueous Solutions, Acidified Water & Electroplating
    • Physics: Electromagnetic crane, Electric Bell, Relay and Ticker Timer

The highlight of the Science Week was the Science Quiz Bee 2016 with its theme: “Knowledge is Power”. The week event ended on Friday afternoon with the awarding of prizes for the winners of the projects and the quiz bee.

It was a very fruitful and successful event and everyone had great fun enjoying and learning as they participated at the different events.
