Manila - Parañaque: another 'batch' of ESL learners heads happily home

MANILA: 2nd February 2008 -- Around the Region there are at least two English as Second Language (ESL, to give it its customary title) programmes for members of the region wanting to start out with this language or improve skills they already have.  One is located in Melbourne, another in Manila.  In the case of Manila - the Seminaryo at
Parañaque the Korea Province sends young confreres who have already completed their practical training and who have begun their theological studies. In most cases they have already received ministries of lector and acolyte.  They spend a year at Seminaryo ng Don Bosco where the Jungchul Academy has a branch.  The instructors are all Filipinos.
Confreres from Vietnam and ITM are also given the opportunity to enrol in English classes.  At the moment two young confreres from Vietnam are taking English lessons before heading out to PNG for practical training.  In addition to the Salesians, some other students attend these classes also.
KOR has been the mainstay of this program, realising that it is important for their confreres to be able to communicate internationally, and because English is the language medium for the EAO Region. This year KOR sent 7 confreres and 2 of them are continuing on at
Parañaque for their theological studies.  On 19th February a further 3 Korean confreres are expected to commence English classes.
A local Filipino confrere who has seen all of this in actiion comments that he saw, on arrival, how it was really difficult for the Korean confreres who could barely communicate in English. But then he noted the huge difference when clerics John Bosco Lee, Felix Wee, Joseph Do, Dominic Seong and Lawrence Kang concluded their year's experience and learning: they were give a chance to go  for apostolate in the various Don Bosco settings in Manila, where they were able to practise their English.  At the seminary itself they were given occasions to deliver their speeches and sermonettes.

The five were farewelled from the Seminaryo on 31st January and returned home the following day.
