Youth and Choices of Life in pedagogical perspective

International Congress (UPS)

By Our Own Correspondent

Rome, Italy 23 September 2018 -- One of the events preparing the Synod of Bishops 2018 about 'Young People - Faith and Vocation Discernment' was held at the UPS (Salesian Pontifical University) during last 4 days, September 20-23, 2018.

Most of the 200+ participants were the SDB and FMA sisters coming from four continents. The Congress was opened with the Message of Pope Francis and brought together many famous Salesian and non Salesian speakers - Cardinal Baldisseri (Bishop Synod 2018), Salesian Bishop Raul Biord (Venezuela), Fr. Fabio Attard (General Councilor for Youth Ministry) and many others.

We are glad to see also few EAO province members - some current students at the Salesian University (TLS, CIN, KOR, THA, VIE) or Youth Ministry delegates (FIN-FIS) and few other confreres.

Among the many conferences, sharing of good practices and magisterial talks is shining one 'very Salesian and very practical' reflection by UPS Professor, Fr. Michal Vojtas about 'Salesian Pedagogy of Vocation and Choice'. Fr. Vojtas helps us understand the dynamics and values of the classical Salesian Aspirantes of the past and the modern ways of more personalized ways of Salesian creative fidelity today. The sharp and charismatically rich reflection offers much food for evaluation and practical application in our EAO aspirantates in Vietnam, Timor Leste, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and in the Philippines.

The Salesian Pontifical University (UPS) and the Auxilium Pontifical Faculty in Rome, in their joint effort, had organized the International Youth Congress - Giovani e Scelte di Vita: Prospettive Educative. It was held in the UPS (Rome) from September 20-23, 2018. Many Salesians, FMAs and other members of the Salesian family were privileged to take part in this serious study, and theological and pastoral reflection on the young, their world and their needs. This Congress was big help for all the participants to prepare and be attuned to the spirit and proceedings of the upcoming Synod on Youth.

The Congress saw a deeper enrichment in the knowledge and presentation of the situation of the young people from the five continents of the world which were discussed too from the anthropological, psychological and pedagogical perspectives. Going profoundly into the discussion, the ecclesiastical and Salesian views made the participants locate our Christian and special interpretation and interventions in order to respond more appropriately to the desires of the young people. At the end, there is always the realization to be present as Salesians, educators and evangelizers, to the young people wherever they are so that we may be able to accompany them in making life choices leading to the experience of fullness of life with God.

The whole Congress provided a serious reflection on the world of the young in the context of family spirit. It was a big occasion to meet confreres and other members of the Salesian family and be enriched by the different "charisms" within the charism of Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello. Thanks to the Congregation for having initiated this serious and yet enriching event which only shows how we are serious in encountering and loving God in the young people.
