Provincial of Japan, Fr. Mario Yamanouchi, appointed as Bishop

Vatican -- Today, on 2 June 2018, Pope Francis has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Saitama, Japan, Fr Mario Michiaki Yamanouchi, S.D.B., currently provincial of the Salesian Society of Saint John Bosco in Japan (GIA).


Fr Mario Michiaki Yamanouchi, S.D.B., was born on 8 December 1955 in Saiki, diocese of Oita. He entered the Salesian Novitiate in Manucho, Argentina, in 1975. He gave his perpetual vows on 24 January 1982. From 1976 to 1979 he studied philosophy and theology in Córdoba, Argentina. Fr. Mario holds a bachelor’s degree in theology and educational sciences, then was ordained a priest on 21 December 1984 in San Juan, Argentina, and returned to Japan on 26 February 1997. Since priestly ordination he has held various positions in Argentina, Japan and at provincial level.


In Argentina: catechist at the Domenico Savio Institute in Córdoba (1985-1987; catechist at the Michele Rua Institute in Córdoba (1987-1991), Novice director at San Michele in La Plata (1991-1992 rector of the Ramos Mejia House in Buenos Aires (1992-1996), and provincial councilor (1987-1992).


In Japan: he studied to regain mastery of the Japanese language at the Salesian Study Centre in Oita (1997-1998), then served as spiritual assistant at the Salesian Polytechnic of Ikuei (Tokyo) and Rector of the religious communities of Suginami (1999-2004), of Chofu - Formation house (2004-2010) and of the Provincial house in Yotsuya. At the province level he was a spiritual director of the Mary Help of Christian Association, ADMA (2010-2014), 2007-2008), provincial councilor and delegate for the formation (2007-2009), provincial delegate for Don Bosco Past Pupils (2009-2012), Vice-provincial (2010-2014) and last December 4, 2014 was appointed by the Rector Major as provincial of the Salesian Society in Japan (2014-2020).


During his four years as provincial superior he was especially closely following the process of reshaping of the Salesian presences and fostering the preferential option for the poor youth and migrants in Japanese Church, as the Salesian family animator he was involved deeply in the accompaniment of ADMA, of the Salesian Cooperators (EAO Tokyo Congress 2017) and was at the birth of the Don Bosco Past Pupils Federation of Japan (2015) as well fostering the preparation of the incoming EAO Regional Congress in 2020.


Saitama (before 2003 named Urawa) diocese is located close to Tokyo, with about 14 million of population and 120.000+ Catholics (0.8%), majority of them are non Japanese migrants. A total of 58 priests (24 diocesan clergy and 24 religious) and 280 sisters and 37 male religious are ministering in 53 parishes and large variety of Catholic education and social works.


With the appointment of Fr. Mario we are loosing a proactive communicators - he was a prolific correspondent of the Australasia news, always ready to share the events, the dreams or processes going on in his province and since last 2015 also launched so far the unique video message of the provincial in the whole Congregation.


In the name of all EAO Salesians and especially in the name of his colleagues, 11 EAO SDB provincials we congratulate Fr. Mario for his new assignment and pray for the Province of Japan in this special moment of history and for the whole diocesan community of Saitama!

Mario continue to be A Good Shepherd in the way of Don Bosco and always be blessed with a Eucharistic Heart!! Praying that Mama Mary may inspire, guide, protect and keep him healthy as always.

    살레시오회 일본관구 Fr. 마리오 야마노우치 관구장, 일본 사이타마 교구의 새 주교로 임명

    2018년 6월 2일 오늘프란치스코 교황님께서는 일본 사이타마 교구의 새로운 주교로 마리오 미치아키 야마노우치 신부(SDB, 성 요한 보스코의 살레시오회 일본관구장)’를 임명하셨다.

    마리오 미치아키 야마노우치 신부는 1955년 12월 8일에 일본 오이타 교구 사이키에서 태어났다그는 1975년 아르헨티나 마누초에 있는 살레시오 수련소에서 입회했고 1982년 1월 24일에 종신서원을 했다. 1976년부터 1979년까지 아르헨티나 코르도바에서 철학과 신학을 공부했고 신학과 교육학으로 학사 학위를 받았으며 1984년 12월 21일 아르헨티나 산 후안에서 사제로 서품된 후 1997년 2월 26일 일본으로 돌아왔다그는 사제로 서품된 이후 아르헨티나와 일본관구 차원에서 다양한 직책을 맡아 왔다.

     

    아르헨티나 관구에서코르도바의 도메니코 사비오 연구소(1985-1987) 카테키스트(전례 및 성무담당)로 사목코르도바의 미켈레 루아 연구소(1987-1991) 카테키스트라 플라타의 산 미켈레 공동체 원장(1991-1992), 부에노스 아이레스의 라모스 메지아 하우스 원장(1992-1996)을 역임했으며 동시에 관구평의원(1987-1992)으로 활동했다.

     

    일본 관구에서그는 오이타(1997-1998)의 살레시오 센터에서 일본어를 다시금 배웠고 이케이(도쿄)의 살레시안 폴리텍 직업학교에서 영적지도자로 봉사하였다. 1999년부터 2004년까지는 수지나미 수사공동체의 원장 및 조후 양성공동체와 관구관의 원장(2004-2010)을 지냈다관구차원의 봉사로서 ADMA의 영적지도신부(2010-2014)를 역임하고관구평의원(2007-2008) 및 양성위원장(2007-2009)을 지냈다돈보스코 동문회 담당(2009-2012)으로도 활동했으며, 2010년 부관구장으로 임명되어 2014년까지 일했다그리고2014년 말인 12월 4일 총장님으로부터 일본관구의 관구장으로 임명되어 2020년까지가 임기였다.

     

    지난 4년간 관구장상직을 수행하는 동안 그는 일본교회 안에서 가난한 젊은이들과 이민자들을 위한 살레시안의 현존과 새로운 역할을 위해 사목재조정을 위해 특별한 노력을 기울여왔다.

    동시에 그는 살레시오가족 담당으로 ADMA를 동반하기 위해 깊은 유대를 맺어왔고지난2017년 열렸던 EAO 살레시오협력자 도쿄 대회와 돈보스코동문회 창립기념(2015)에서 그리고 2020년으로 예정된 EAO 지역총회의 준비를 위해서도 만전을 기해왔다.

     

    그가 주교로 임명된 사이타마 교구(2003년까지는 우라와 교구)는 도쿄와 인접해있는 도시로 1,400만명의 인구와 12만명 이상의 가톨릭신자(0.8%)가 살고 있으며 대다수의 신자가 일본인이 아닌 이민자들이다교구 안에는 모두 58명의 사제(교구사제 24수도회 24...?)가 있으며 280명의 수녀와 37명의 고유수사가 53개의 본당과 다양한 사목터에서 가톨릭 교육 및 사회사목을 수행하고 있다.

     

    마리오 관구장의 주교직 임명으로 인해 우리 수도회는 활동적인 커뮤니케이터를 잃었다그는 많은 뉴스를 전해주는 Australasia 뉴스의 특파원이었다늘 관구에서 일어나는 다양한 활동을 나눠줄 준비가 되어있었으며지난 2015년부터는 관구와 수도회를 위한 특별한 영상 메시지도 전해주었다.

     

    모든 EAO지역 살레시오 회원의 이름으로 그리고 특별히 그의 형제들인 EAO지역 11개 관구장들의 이름으로 그의 주교직 수락을 축하드린다그리고 역사적으로 특별한 순간을 지내고 있는 일본관구와 사이타마 교구의 모든 교회공동체를 위해 기도드린다.
