A Korean Pilgrimage to Salesian Places Reaches Rome

RMG-ROME: January 5, 2015  - On the eve of the Feast of the Visit of the Magi from the East, the SDB Generalate was visited by 43 pilgrims from Korea, accompanied by Fr Marcello Baek SDB, the KOR Vice Provincial, and Br Philip Yoon (Seok Real) SDB who is assigned in Gwangju. Included among this Salesian Family pilgrim group were the FMA and Caritas nuns, some Salesian Cooperators, some collaborators, and friends from the different Salesian houses in Korea.

Before arriving here in Rome, they had already visited the places of St Francis of Sales in Annecy (France), then Valdocco and Becchi-Castelnuovo, where the origins of St John Bosco are located. The group had been to the other religious sites of Siena, Assisi and Naples too.

Here in Rome, four Korean Salesians, who are presently staying in the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS) joined this pilgrim group. Their short Christmas break from university lectures gave them an opportunity be with their fellow Koreans and they helped enlighten these visitors about the sights here in Rome and the Vatican.

Since the Korean group had just about two hours to spend at the Generalate, they had enough time to experience three things: a warm welcome and a talk given by the Rector Major, Fr Angel Fernandez Artime SDB; an informal time and picture taking with the Rector Major; and finally a celebration of the Eucharist among themselves in the main Chapel. It was such a wonderful Salesian experience for them to spend these meaningful moments in the Generalate.

Going back to their bus, one of them talked about the message of the Rector Major. There was this awareness that it was indeed addressed not only to them but also for the others back home in Korea -those who did not have the opportunity to meet and hear the Rector Major. Among other matters, the Rector Major had reminded them to be like Don Bosco there in Korea, and never forget the young especially those marginalized or in the periphery.
