Lourdes Parish - Marian Youth Camp (FIS)

PUNTA PRINCESA, CEBU CITY(FIS) 28-31 May 2013 -- The Salesian Youth Movement of Lourdes Parish organized its annual Marian Youth Camp with the theme, “Mary, Model of Our Faith.” This year it had 35 young people coming mostly from the parish and two other Salesian settings of Lawaan and Pasil. They were assisted by 15 committed Salesian youth leaders headed by Mr. Eduardo Empelis Jr. This Marian Youth Camp is on its 7th year and its main purpose is to train new leaders for the youth groups.

This Leadership camp had topics based on the acronym FACTOR, because we believe that there is a Marian factor in every youth leader.
F - Focus on Self-Awareness
A - Appreciating Life
C - Citizenship
T - Trusting others
O - Organization
R - Responsible service

In his homilies, Fr. Joriz Foz Calsa, SDB, who is also the FIS SYM Official Delegate, stressed on the discipleship of Mary. For each day of the camp he dwelt on Marian biblical citations and from these he drew out some of the qualities of a true disciple-leader for others.

A typical day would consist of group building activities and games followed by a processing session to share, reflect on perceived values and personal action plans. At night, activities includes soiree, special rosary, Taize prayer, and group affirmations.

This parish is really full and busy every summer. In fact, this MYC 7 activity was only the last of a series of activities that the Lourdes Parish Youth leaders did organize. Before this, there was a summer workshop called: “Summer Saya sa Lourdes” [Saya means FUN!], for sports, music, and arts. This year we have trained 270 young people to do skills rather than just stay the whole day in front of computer games.

Now that summer is over, it is time to return to school or rather, time to apply what the young have learned during their long summer break.
