Study edition of 'Gaudete and Exsultate' published in Manila

By Fr. Sal Putzu, SDB

Makati, the Philippines, 28 August 2018 -- We are glad to share our recent publication 'Study edition' of the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on 'The Call to Holiness in Today's World' (Gaudete and Exsultate), already widely welcomed and spread in the Philippines.

Our global, social and religious context is a world very much characterized by materialism, hedonism, search for profit and practical atheism that avoids using the word 'God'. Upon reading Gaudete and Exsultate, one realizes immediately that much of its content is not new, but we capture the main idea of Pope Francis about holiness in the lives of the 'little ones'. The roots of thi ways can be found especially in St. Igantius of Loyola and Francis de Sales. We appreciate especially the revolutionary idea of St. Francis de Sales, who proclaimed claerly that all are called to be holy and that are many ways to become saints.

For the non Filipino readers might be very interesting especially the 'back up' document of 1999 'Filipino Way to Holiness', a prophetic call of 19 years ago, that vibrates strongly with the Pope Francis Exhortation of 2018.

The 268 page booklet of "Word and Life Publications" (www.wordandlife.org) does comprise many valuable aids for group study, reflection and personal meditation:

  • Messages or presentations from: Apostolic Nuncio, Cardinal Tagle, Cardinal Rosales,
  • Context, content, roots of Gaudete and Exsultate
  • English text of Gaudete and Exsultate

  • Study Aids:
  • Subject index (20 pages)
  • Quotable Quotes from Gaudete and Exsultate (22 pages)
  • Methodological suggestions for study (14 pages)
  • The hundred faces of Holiness according Pope Francis (5 pages)
  • The three-lane Road Map to Holiness (8 pages)

  • Document - Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)
  • Filipino Way to Holiness (invitation by Card. Rosales) ed. 1999 - both in Tagalog and English (117 pages)

World and Life Publications already published the following documents of the Magisterium with subject index and other suitable study aids: John Paul II (Evangelium Vitae and Dies Domini), Benedict XVI (Deus Caritas Est, Sacramentum Caritatis, Spe Salvi, Caritas in Veritate, Verbum Domini) and Pope Francis: Lumen Fidei, Evangelii Gaudium, On a Mission of Mercy and Compassion, Laudato si and Amoris Laetitia.
