Vietnamese missionary ordained in Paraguay

By SC Office PAR

Asunción, Paraguay, 7 July 2018 -- In the parish of Virgen del Carmen of Carmelo Peralta, the Salesian missionary from Vietnam, Vincent Nguyen Quoc Bao, received priestly ordination by Mons. Gabriel Escobar, SDB, Bishop of the Chaco Paraguayo Apostolic Vicariate.

The Eucharistic celebration of the ordination was celebrated by many Salesians, attended by FMA sisters, with the presence about 200 faithful and young people. It was the first priestly ordination celebrated in the Chaco Paraguayo.

The Salesians are present in Chaco since 1917 and in 1948 was established the Apostolic Vicariate and it's one of the 6 missionary territories entrusted to the Salesian Congregation in Latin America. Population of the Vicariate is only 19.000 inhabitants (6000 of them are indigenous people). By religion 16.500 are Catholics, 1.500 are other Christian denominations and 1000 are non Christians. The territory of the Vicariate is quite large (96.030 km2) with very low density of 0.2 person per km2 and no paved roads at all.

Among personnel of the Vicariate are also other 4 EAO missionaries (3 from Vietnam and one from Indonesia) sent by the Rector Major since 2010.

Fr. Vincent Bao (37 years old) was member of the 139th missionary expedition in 2009 after finishing his postnovitiate (Don Rua community) in Dalat, Vietnam.
