DBTI-Makati Holds Leadership Camp 2018

By Cl. JJ Aguila, SDB

Oriental Mindoro, the Philippines, 5 May 2018 -- With the theme “SIMULAYAG,” a combination of the words “Simula” (start) and “Layag” (sail), 66 strong- willed and inspired Servant Leaders of the Junior and Senior High School students of Don Bosco Technical Institute—Makati went for the annual Servus Leadership Camp in Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro.

For eight days, the leaders underwent a series of formation about themselves, family, others, vocation, and nature. The campers also visited an indigenous tribe, the Mangyan community of Baco, Oriental Mindoro where they performed presentations and organized games for the young Mangyans and later on presented their gifts.

But what moved the campers into deeper service and appreciation of life is their 3-day immersion experience with the locals of Sitio Banilad in Pinamalayan. According to the campers, they experienced and witnessed the simplicity of life in the village and how the camp allowed them to detach from their mobile phones and learn how to truly communicate through sharing of stories.

Simulayag also refers to going back to the basics wherein campers will live in tents and no means of communication outside the campsite.

The campers also experienced how village folks share the limited resources like water and electricity; how the sea and the mountains provide their food and livelihood. The immersion was capped off by a breakfast program organized by the campers themselves.

By the bonfire, Mr. Jay Tauyan, the Camp Master, delivered the closing Good Night sharing to the campers the reservation of some people regarding the relevance of the camp. He then challenged everyone to prove to these people that the camp is useful and fruitful, that it was not only an outing but a Servant Leadership Camp.
