BL. ARTEMIDE ZATTI:  A DIOCESAN INQUIRY

Here is an account of Fr. Nestor Impelido, the Vice Postulator of the Province regarding the Diocesan Inquiry for Bl. Artemide Zatti:  From March 4 to March 10, 2018, the Archdiocese of Lipa City, Batangas conducted a diocesan inquiry on a presumed miracle through the intercession of Blessed Artemide Zatti, an Argentinian Salesian Brother who died in March 15, 1951.

Upon the request of Fr. Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General of the Society of St. Francis of Sales, Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa City instituted a diocesan tribunal to investigate the authenticity of the presumed miraculous healing of Mr. Renato Narvaez, elder brother of Bro. Roberto “Obet” Narvaez, SDB.

The diocesan tribunal interrogated the relatives of Mr. Renato, to whom Bro. Obet had suggested to pray to Blessed Artemide Zatti for the grace of healing. Mr. Renato, in fact, had two strokes and had suffered severe brain hemorrhage. Believing that there was no chance that Mr. Renato would get better and lacking the inancial means for a surgical intervention and prolonged hospitalization, the family had decided to bring him home.

The diocesan tribunal also interrogated the doctors of Daniel Mercado Medical Center in Tanauan, Batangas, who attended to Mr. Renato’s medical conditions.  Indeed, these marveled on the unexpected recovery of the latter, in spite of the lack of the necessary medical intervention that could have insured the latter’s survival.

Fr. Martin Macasaet was notary and Dr. Claver Ramos was medical expert of the diocesan tribunal.  The latter, Dr. Ramos, was in fact the irst doctor invited by Bro. Obet to assist our sick Confreres when the Zatti Clinic was irst established in Don Bosco Technical Institute, Makati City.

Last March 16, 2018, Fr. Cameroni submitted the results of the diocesan inquiry to the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints who will study the indings. In turn, it will give its conclusions, to Pope Francis who expressed his personal devotion to Blessed Artemide Zatti while he was still Jesuit Provincial of Buenos Aires.

Let us accompany this Roman process, with the hope that we might soon have the canonization of Blessed Artemide Zatti. Through his intercession, let us also pray for an increase of Salesian vocations, most especially for the Lay Brothers.
