'+Description+': The complete term is 'religious profession'. Whereas it is God who calls and consecrates a person, it is the person who responds by way of the act of profession, via a formula (cf C. 24). Hence it is a public, visible act denoting a choice and commitment. It finds its source in baptism and begins a new form of existence. The Salesian Constitutions devote an entire chapter (Chapter 3) to 'The Profession of the Salesian'. The articles cover the whole gamut of the act from its personal nature (C. 22 which also makes explicit reference to the Congregation's identity as apostolic), to its meaning (C. 23), the formula used (C. 24), and the role that profession plays in the life of the consecrated person (C. 25). A good way to consider profession in the Salesian context is to go back to the beginnings. Initially, after December 18 1859, the first Salesians were bound to Don Bosco only by a personal commitment to the exercise of charity, the promise of charity. On May 14, 1862, the first official profession of canonical vows took place in accordance with the Constitutions which had been under development since 1858.

'+Context (examples of use)+': "The confreres of the Society of St Francis de Sales were convened by the Rector [Major] and most of them re-committed themselves to the Society by the official profession of triennial vows.... all together pronounced the formula of vows loudly and clearly...then each signed his name in the book prepared for that purpose". (From the minutes of the event)

'+Other notes+': Did Don Bosco make profession? Yes, according to a note in ASC A012 Cronachetti, by Bonetti (in Annal vol 3) which records Don Bosco as saying: "As you were making your profession before me I too was taking my vow in perpetuity before this same crucifix. I offered myself to the Lord ready for any sacrifice for his greater glory and for the salvation of souls, especially of the young".

'Giovane Provveduto' is a short form). A loan term is not translated whereas a calque is.
