'+Description+': We do not find the precise phrase used by Don Bosco himself, and in fact in his entire ''Opere Edite'' we only find the word ''predilezione'' two or three times and never in relation to a special love for the young. But we find expressions of such love, e.g. "That you are young is enough to make me love you very much" (DB in ''Il giovane provveduto'' 1847 p. 7) that were then taken up first by Fr Albera, his second successor: "It is not enough to feel a certain attraction for them: they must be the object of our real '''predilection'''". He then adds that this predilection "is the Salesian vocation itself". The by now formulaic phrase ''predilection for the young'' is enshrined in C.14. This love of predilection has its basis in a universal love that can only be of God Himself. It is an expression of pastoral charity and gives meaning to Salesian life. The frequent reference to the term ''predilection'' in other articles of the Constitutions make it clear that there is a divine origin and impulse involved: "predilection of the Lord Jesus" (C. 196), "predilection of Christ for the young" (C. 81). We then find frequent reference to the phrase found in C. 14 in the Salesian magisterium, especially letters of the Rectors Major, the Ratio. As to what it is in concrete terms, C. 14 states it simply: "For their welfare we give generously of our time, talents and health".

'+Context (examples of use)+': The formula which indicates the need to work for the integral salvation of the young, and in particular of those who are at risk, contains two references: predilection for the young, and participation in the mission to the young and the poor. (Fr Vecchi in his letter ''The Salesian Family is twenty-five years old'' 1997)

'Giovane Provveduto' is a short form). A loan term is not translated whereas a calque is.
