'+Description+': The 19th General Chapter had the following to say about a Salesian Parish: "The following are the principal marks of a parish confided to the Salesians: -- particular attention to the evangelization of youth, of the poor and those outside the Church, - special ability and zeal to give solid catechetical instruction to the faithful, either collectively or singly in order to reach participation in the sacraments, especially Confession and Communion. - a characteristic gift of kindly gentleness which tends in the Salesian approach to the apostolate to create in parochial work a parochial community, or the 'family of God' guided paternally by the parish priest. The presence of Salesians in parish life brings with it a number of problems of religious observance, and relationship with the Salesian community, with externs, with the bishop, with the diocesan clergy, with other religious, with civil authorities, with organizations and associations of lay people, which have to be studied and resolved in the spirit of genuine discussion and the pastoral directives by which we work together. It is self evident that Salesian pastoral work, thus conceived, is in harmony with our spirit, with the demands of the times, and demands an adequate formation of those working in the parishes.

By the time the Constitutions were renewed at the 22nd General Chapter we have a much more positive approach to Parish enunciated: C. 40 which is the so-called Oratory criterion indicates that every Salesian presence has the character of 'parish' insofar as it is a centre for evangelisation. We recall the history of Don Bosco's presence in Turin when he began to respond to the reality that many young people had no sense of belonging to a parish, and saw to it that the Oratory gave them such a sense of belonging.

The parish is one of the main mission settings for the Salesian mission. A Salesian parish is distinguished by its popular nature, its attention to the young.
