The basic document of reference for Salesian formation is the ''Ratio Fundamentalis'' (Ratio) which can be found on The Salesian Web Site under Formation - documents or similarly on Salesian Digital Library (SDL).

The Ratio, or 'Formation of Salesians of Don Bosco: Principles and norms', its full title, considers Salesian formation in general, the Salesian formation process, starting from the pre-novitiate and arriving at the period known as ongoing or continuing formation, which lasts a life time. In recent years, the notion of formation involving a personal project of life has become prominent: a personal project which is also consonant with a community project which in turn takes its place within the province project.
