The choice of the theme comes from the short survey made during the EAO rector formation in Hua Hin, last August. Main request of the formation house rectors asked to be helped with - evaluation of formandi: formation process, effectiveness, - individual spiritual direction - deepen the Salesian spirituality - foster the human maturity of the young salesians

Dynamics: Daily Eucharist, homily with lauds; 4 working sessions – with input, sharing, clarifications

Michael McGuire, originally from Ireland, 20 years long formation experience, Rulla school of formative psychology of Gregorian University Rome. Now is the Ongoing formation center, Manila – training priests and religious (Myanmar experience).

DAY TWO – JANUARY 3, 2008

Personal notes on the day written on-the-fly by VK

Summary Day 2

Religious Life - new perpsectives in modern times

Religious Life - Paradigms

Eucharist: president Fr. Peter Rankin – short homily (Focus on witnessing – looking at our life, recalled the JPII ‘Duc in Altum’).

Today is the canonical visitation of the Provincial house community by Fr. Theparat

TOPIC: PARADIGMS OF RELIGIOUS LIFE

'''Morning session:'''

EAO mobile: First we should personally focus on our personal vocational growth. Yesterday the focus was on the concept of freedom & responsibility, about the background and background of our young Salesians. It was a preliminary work for the formation processes, to verbalize together in what consist our understanding of person, freedom.

Mike McGuire: Exercise – to verbalise in 5 minutes ‘what is religious life?’ according you?

Sharing on Religious Life paradigm

Sharing in small groups (2-3 persons):

1. Classic paradigm – looking for greater perfection (holiness)

What is the Salesian paradigm? Recognize that the ratio goes back this paradigm.

2. Modern paradigm

Born from the impact of Vatican II (stress on the call to holiness, justice and peace are integral part of the gospel proclamation – commitment to the world).

Sharing in small groups

3. Postmodern paradigm

Trying to overcome the paradigm, is a shift trying to overcome the deviations after Vat II, also to recover the essence of Religious Life. Formation for mission (new focus). Some still focus on person-centered formation. Some want to experience discipleship (invited by Jesus Mk 8, sent by God).

3.Sacramental model – a new attempt by the Church

Dilemma

a)The ecclesiological tradition of Trent and Vatican I, which strongly accentuated the external elements of belonging to the Church

b)The tradition of the Reformation that stressed the opposite poles.

c)The Council found in the category ‘sacramentum’ a bridge between the two traditions. The model of sacramentum of RL seems fit to hold the two together. The external dimension of the Catholic tradition is maintained. There is no sacrament without visible sign.

'''Afternoon session'''

Modernity and Postmodernity: values the inner person and his autonomy

Conclusion

Our present culture has a real hunger for meaning, for reasons to live, to hope. We have experienced the ‘hidden treasures’.

GROUP SHARING – on the paradigms

Summary Day 2

DAY THREE – JANUARY 4, 2008

Personal notes on the day written on-the-fly by VK

Summary Day 3

Eucharist: presided by Fr. Rolo Alcasid – homily (First Friday of the month, of the year; Focus on the Gospel – What do you want from me? Come and see!)

'''TOPIC: THE CHRISTIAN VIEW OF PSYCHOLOGY'''

'''Morning session:'''

EAO mobile: Wrap up of yesterday: broadening our paradigm – of course eclectic way (when we speak or offer some program about sexuality. Definition of RL does include the vows.

Mike McGuire introduction: Where we start from? The implicit assumptions – that I’m not aware of.

Feedback: Invite supervision into formation field? Somebody who is in touch with us – about celibacy, motivations – asking the expert to supervise. That’s a working process, not many congregations are doing it. We should continue slowly.

PSYCHOLOGY in the philosophical roots (ppt): SELF and VIRTUES in Greek philosophy

Five levels

1. Levels-of-explanation model – theology, psychology, DNA approach (biology, chemistry)

2.Integration model – science and psychology: interdisciplinary approach

3.Modern pastoral care model

4.Biblical counseling ‘biblio theraphy’

5.Christian psychology model – contemporary

Feedback from the group sharing [What strikes you today?]

DAY FOUR – JANUARY 5, 2008
