Korean SYM leaders make solemn promise of service

SEOUL: 7 April 2011 -- On the 3rd of April, an historical event took place in the provincial house, Korea. Six young people, known as the “Oratorians of St. John Bosco”, made a solemn promise, in the presence of the Salesian community, and before God the Father, to be apostles to youth. As well as the Salesians, including the Provincial Fr Stephen Nam, there were other young people present.
“The Oratorians of St. John Bosco” is an association of the Salesian Youth Movement, and is made up of SYM group leaders in Korea. The event took place during the closing mass of the Lenten Retreat for Korean SYM youth, which had started a day earlier. Fr Stephen Nam, the main celebrant at the mass, spoke to the youngsters in his homily “We should never see people and the world just with a worldly outlook; we all have to see the world with the eyes of the Lord, so that we may see what our life really is. When we see things clearly with the eyes of the Lord we can’t help but dedicate our life to the service of the others, especially for fellow youngsters in your position.”
He encouraged the young leaders, calling them “the servants of servants”, to be faithful servants for SYM youth in Korea. Those present for the Mass were deeply touched by the good hearts of these young people who had decided to offer their daily life for the sanctification of fellow youngsters because it is something we rarely see in this materialised world.
The young leaders solemnly promised five things, first to be messengers of the spirit which pervaded the Oratory, second, to remain close to the bible, third to be faithful to the sacraments, especially confession and the eucharist, fourth to dedicate themselves to social justice with the intention of establishing the Kingdom of God, and fifth to form fellowship with others by sharing their love.
The mass was attended by 80 SYM youths and 10 Salesians, 6 Salesian Sisters.
